Introducing Lola Mignot

We met Sayulita local Lola Mignot in Mexico on a surf trip earlier this year and fell instantly in love with her young, fun energy in the waves, worldly cultural perspective and friendly smile. It wasn't long before we returned to Mexico to shoot the Spring 2014 lookbook with the Seeababes from California and welcomed her to the family!

Lola is lucky to have the longboard-friendly waves of Sayulita be her home break and to have traveled around the world with her Gypset Style family. She recently scored her first cover shot in Foam Symmetry magazine's September 2013 issue, so we caught up with her while she was in town to participate in the Malibu Surf Classic Women's Longboard Open tomorrow to find out how it felt when photographer Nick LaVecchia delivered the news.

Lola Mignot makes her cover girl debut on the front page of Foam Symmetry magazine.

Age: Turned 15 on the 4th of September
Born: In Paris.
Has lived in: Tahiti, in my sailboat, and Mexico
Parents are from: My dad is half Argentine, half Spanish, and my mom is from France.

How did you feel when you heard your photo was going to be on the cover of Foam Symmetry?

Well, Nick [Lavecchia] told me "I have a surprise for you..." and I thought, well, what is it going to be? So he told me to check his Instagram and I saw the picture and he was like "yeah, that's the cover!" I was like, "wow, really?" I had never seen the picture and it was so pretty. I told my mom and she was so happy!

What do you love about surfing at your home waves in Sayulita?

It's the best. It's just like hanging out with everyone, except we're in the water! We have fun, take party waves and push each other around. Everybody sings in the water... I love it!

What surfers have influenced and taught you the most?

All the surfers in Sayulita have taught me—especially my brother, my cousins, and my coach Israel. They're always there to help me and point out how I can improve my surfing.

What are your future plans for surfing contests and travel?

I'm going to the ISA Longboard Championship in Peru this month, and hopefully on to Australia with my friend Karina. I'd like to compete and travel more, so I'm looking for sponsors who could help me with that.

Are you excited about the Malibu contest?

Yes! I'm so happy that they invited me!

Graceful goofy. Photo by Nick LaVecchia.

A Seea family photo in the VW tent.
It was a gorgeous sunny day in Malibu last Friday for the Malibu Surf Classic Women's Logger Open event, presented by Seea and Bing Surfboards. The water was refreshingly warm enough to surf in a bikini (under their jerseys) and the Seea crew camped out under a cluster of umbrellas to cheer on the competing ladies.

Even though the waves were micro-size, all the participants made the best of it and impressed us with their quick cross-stepping on the white ripples. Thanks to everyone who came out to support and congratulations to Lola Mignot (read all about her in the next post, here) for placing Third in the finals of the Women's Logger Open!

And they are off!

We stayed cool in the hot sun under umbrellas.

We got to meet Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, the real live Gidget! Kathy's dad wrote the 1959 movie, "Gidget" based on her diary about hanging out at the Malibu pier and learning to surf with the guys.

Surfboard shaper extraordinare and musician, Ashley Lloyd showed us her band merch stored in an awesome vintage suitcase.

Loading up the car to go camping.
Proving that you don't have to travel far to unplug, the nice boys at Thalia Street invited the Seeababes for a spontaneous camping trip this past weekend, a mere hop and skip away in San Clemente. We rounded up the girls in rapid motion and were off to the beach in a sparkling vintage ride to meet up with the crew to catch waves, ride fast wheels and gather around a fire.

Thanks to Nick and the Thalia Street family for the unforgettable time! Check out Thalia Street's Facebook page for more snapshots.

Waterwoman and Seeababe: Luki O'Keefe

With a surfboard shaper for a dad, Luki O’Keefe's earliest memories of childhood were in the ocean. She was pushed into whitewater waves by her dad at Doheny State Beach and San Onofre as young as 3-years-old and continues to surf those same breaks today. In fact, that’s right where we met Luki, at San Onofre when she was changing into her neoprene outrigger canoeing pants!

We immediately bonded with Luki over our shared love of vintage fashion and her passion for playing in the ocean. You'll surely recognize her as one of our main models and one of our favorite local surfing companions. We visited Luki and her dad at his shaping bay to talk about growing up by, on, and in the sea.

Luki with her O'Keefe longboard.

When did you start surfing on your own?

When I was seven my dad shaped me and my sister our first board to share. Of course we wanted a huge pink heart with flames surrounding it. I still have that silly board. I stopped surfing when I was about 9 because my cousins pushed me into a few too many huge waves.

I stayed close to the ocean by sailing, fishing, free diving, and cave hunting with my family as well as competitive outrigger canoeing. When I was 13, my cousin Megan O’Keefe convinced me to go surfing with her on Christmas Eve. Since then, every Christmas Eve we paddle out together and celebrate the day I really fell in love with surfing.

How has surfing become part of your life since then?

Shortly after, I got a job at my grandpa’s fish market in Dana Point near the Boneyard. I spent a few years surfing and hanging out with our tight pack of jetty rats. Some of my best memories were made on our road trips up and down our coast. It's been fun watching those friends grow up, some quit surfing, and some are building careers out of it. Although I've never even considered participating in contest other than the occasional expression session, surfing will always be a huge part of my personal life.

Luki and her dad, Jerry O'Keefe.

How has your Dad played a role in your surfing?

My Dad always understood the importance of surfing. It’s more of a priority and a medicine in our family than just a hobby. When I was young and too timid to really enjoy surfing, he would still take me out every now and then and say that someday I will get hooked, and when that day comes he will have done his best to prepare me. That day came and thanks to him I learned a bit faster than most beginners.

He taught me how to love the ocean deeper than just surfing, and how to use surfing to balance a life outside of the ocean.

What’s it like working with your dad?

Working for my Dad in the surf industry means I can take breaks to surf if the tide is right, and I can build my own schedule around school, activities, travels, and surf forecasts without worrying. I feel pretty blessed.

From your dad being a shaper, how does it help to know the different details of board shapes and how they work?

The more you know, the easier it will be to modify your board to the conditions you plan to surf as well as your style, weight, and experience. Learning about the way boards work takes a lot of trial and error... unless you have a dad who knows exactly what you need and like ;)

Luki sets up the machine to rough out a new shape.

All smiles, Luki looks on while her dad smooths out her new board.

What are your other passions?

I have always been into lifestyle, portrait, and adventure photography and am learning more and more about that art every day. I also love yoga and traveling. I have every type of waterman/woman in my family so even if surfing is not involved I am usually by, on, or in the sea.

What do you love about wearing Seea?

I was wearing a lot of clothes from thrift stores in the water because I couldn't find comfort in tiny bikinis or manly board shorts. When I started wearing Seea suits I got to keep my vintage-inspired style without ruining clothes or worrying about losing control of bikini bottoms. I feel free and feminine in my Seea suits—free to dance around in the water and free to mix and match pieces to make my own surf outfits.

I'm amazed and grateful for everything Seea has done for and with me. They have taken me on some breathtaking adventures and have introduced me to plenty of lovely people that I now call friends.

Thanks Luki! We are grateful for your friendship, company and all your support too!

Fall in Ventura: A Local's Guide with WetSand Surf Shop

Perfectly lined up at C Street.

Things we love about fall: crisp air, bundling up in cozy sweaters, hot chocolate and that special California coastline of point breaks that light up with winter swell. Every year we look forward to the best season for surfing the magically long points between the Los Angeles County line and Santa Barbara.

The chill and a little bit gritty beach town of Ventura is one of our favorite stops along that stretch of shoreline. With our eyes on the long range report, we checked in with our friend Shannon Menzel, women’s buyer for WetSand surf shop in Ventura to get her insider picks on the area for a weekend day trip. She filled us in on where to get the perfect T-shirt, eat the best local tacos and surf breaks for beginners and shredders alike.

Meet Shannon Menzel of Wetsand Surf Shop, our local tour guide to Ventura.

Best Tacos: Cuernavaca. When a taco spot is not on the main drag and packed with locals, you know its “really really good tacos.” The tacos are small street style, so you can try them all. We did.

Best Healthy Food Spot: Dine outside next to one of the city park's at the organic vegan bistro Mary's Secret Garden. Shannon says to get the pistachio mint smoothie for before surfing, and The Secret Burger after.

Shown left, street style tacos at Cuernavaca. Shown right,  Mary's Secret Garden serves healthy vegan food in Ventura.

Best Classic Surf Spot: Get your longboard and experience the natural perfection of Ventura's famous C Street.

Best Spot for Shredding: Pipes. Shannon says, “It's not so much of a longboard crowd. The spot has changed a bit because they are trying to clean up the beach.”

Shannon’s Favorite Surf Spot: Find your own uncrowded spot between Emma Wood State Beach and Solimar Point. “It's a half mile of little peaks. I call it Emma-Mar.” Solimar is a Seea triple heart like (so much that we named a bikini after it) and must-surf every time we are in that neck of the woods.

Picturesque rocky beaches in Ventura. But we do not recommend trying this in Fall! Photo by Whitney Turner.

Best Place to Take a Walk: The Ventura Botanical Gardens restorative trail starts only few blocks up the road from WetSand surf shop and winds up the mountains. “I walk it every morning,” Shannon says.

A bird's eye view of downtown Ventura from the bottom of the Ventura Botanical Gardens restorative trail.

Best Shopping: WetSand Surf Shop! The family-owned store has the essentials you need from a neighborhood surf shop (magazines, boards, swimsuits and a souvenir WetSand T-shirt) plus things you didn’t know you needed (Big Sur Country Soap and art from local talents). It also offers a great cross-section of girly fashion.

Shannon guarded her secret vintage clothing shopping spots with more security than a secret surf spot, but recommended browsing shabby chic American Home and Garden in downtown Ventura for vintage furniture and home decorating inspiration. We found a great sign there that read our minds about the fun time we had in Ventura, "If you are lucky enough to live at the beach, you are lucky enough."

Style & Soul: The Inspiring Mele Saili

Mele is the best.

Yes, she’s a talented surfer and a beauty at that, but more importantly, she has a kind and modest soul, and is a source of inspiration for everyone around her, including us!

This “inner glow” results from embracing the most enjoyable parts of life, and is clearly visible through Mele’s unique style, expressed most graciously through her surfing and her art.

In the golden light. Photo by Steve Rogers

Mele Saili was born into a surfing family in Pacific Beach, San Diego. Her dad was a shaper and played an influential role in her early surfing career—from shaping her first boards to pushing her and her sister into waves on longboards at Tourmaline. Her grandfather is Larry Gordon, of Gordon & Smith Surfboards, so with surfing in her blood, of course she's a natural!

We talked with Mele more about what she likes to do between sessions and that the most important things to pack on a surf trip.

What role does surfing play in your family?

My grandpa, mom, dad, uncle, brother and sister all surf. I have been fortunate enough to be born into a family that has created an identity through surfing. With my dad being a shaper and Larry Gordon of G&S Surfboards as my grandfather, it has really given me a foundation to be involved with surfing from an early age.

Who has been most influential in shaping your surfing style?

I would constantly study footage of surfers like Jen Smith, Kassia Meador, Belinda Baggs and Rell Sunn, especially.

When you are not surfing, how else do you like to spend your time?

I love to paint and draw, things I’ve been doing long before I started surfing. I can spend hours as a time in my room listening to music and painting. Reading books, going to see bands play, sometimes going to museums. I think I might even list ice cream as one of my hobbies!

Staying cool in the pool. Photo by Nick LaVecchia.

What is your Salty Sisters blog and why did you start it?

The idea behind Salty Sisters is finding a connection with other women who share the same love of the sea. My three friends and I created this blog to document our surf adventures and display our sisterhood that we formed through surfing.

What do you like about surfing with girls?

I like surfing with a pack of girls because people are slightly taken back by it as if it’s some sort of spectacle. When surfing with girls, there’s usually a lot of laughter involved.

Did you grow up surfing with mostly guys or girls?

I grew up primarily being the only girl out in the lineup other than my sis. It was hard to find girls my age to go surfing with. Usually when surfing with guys, you either get the pervey old guys, kooky guys that drop in on you because you’re a girl, or in the best cases your close friends who look out for you like big brothers. I like surfing with all kinds of people, it’s good to switch it up.

You travel a lot while surfing, but don't have space to pack a lot. What is your advice for what you must bring if you're going on any surf trip?

My packing list usually goes something like this: money, ID, toiletries, first aid kit, travel journal, always double check for your wetsuit, bring stickers for quick ding repair. Never forget sunscreen and always bring adventurous travel companions.

Why do you like surfing in Seea?

There are so many reasons I like Seea. It’s a brand that is made by women for women. They know the needs of a female surfer when it comes to comfort and functionality as well as the desire to look good. They’re pushing bathing suit design to the next level by providing different styles than you are used to seeing. I’m a big fan of the Hermosa suits.

Working with Seea bathing suits has been such a blessing. This is a brand that stands out among the illusory images of corporate surf brands. The team behind Seea consists of good-hearted people who are stylishly talented and seemingly paving the way for a new direction in women’s surf fashion by looking to the retro bathing suit styles of the past and putting their own twist on them.

Thank you Mele!

Whether it's a wave, a canvas, or the open road, Mele will no doubt conquer anything in her path, disarming those she meets with a charming smile and an open heart. We are proud of Mele for the woman she is and who she will become, and we're honored to have her as part of our family and team.

To find out more about Mele and her art, check out this great interview in Liquid Salt magazine.

Congratulations to Mele for first place win at the 2013 Windansea invitational last weekend!

Nikki Brooks captures Seea Mermaids on film

Nikki Brooks photographed her friends wearing Seea in the kelp forests of Monterey Bay.

One thing that we love about seeing customers wear Seea is all the different ways that they make the suits their own. We were touched to hear from Santa Cruz photographer Nikki Brooks that she was inspired by the beauty of the suits to create an underwater photo series of Seea Mermaids in the chilly waters of Monterey Bay.

Nikki wanted to create a proper sub-marine presentation for the swimming ladies, so she constructed “portholes” to put them in, which were made from salvaged appliances and nautical memorabilia from Jack O'Neill's “Marie Celine" schooner. Yes, the very same Jack O’Neill that invented the wetsuit!

As a born and raised Santa Cruz native, Nikki has photographed the local surf culture for Surfline.com and traveled to document events like the Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational. We asked her more about her brave photography subjects and what she loves about surfing in Santa Cruz.

How Nikki’s photographs were displayed at the Robert Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz for the "Oceans of Art" exhibit, curated by Shawn "Barney" Barron.

Where did you get the idea to photograph your friends underwater?

It all started with the Seea suits, for reals! I loved the style and was inspired to do something creative with the suits besides lifestyle or glam photos. I figured I would do the unnatural thing and take underwater photos of my surfing friends swimming in the ocean. Usually one sees underwater photos of surfers duck diving or swimming in clear, coral laden, warm, tropical waters.  Here in Santa Cruz and across the Bay, the water is cold year around, full of nutrients, resulting in murky green water, full of life and strewn with kelp forests. I sought out my friends that could bare the cold to venture into the water donning Seea suits.

What was the inspiration for putting the photographs in salvaged marine parts?

I wanted to create a visual means to see what I was seeing underwater, a moment encapsulated in time, but something you can always look at and feel like it is happening right this moment… The treasures on loan from Jack O'Neill's schooner and the O'Neill Sea Odyssey were on display for the exhibit at Robert Blitzer Gallery only, not to be sold.  My dad, Denny Dederick, helped create the weathered nautical fixtures and portholes with his crafty patina work, resulting in something salvaged and from the past, but with a twist.

Nikki's photography display for the group art show at the Robert Blitzer gallery.

What kinds of people, places and things do you like to photograph for fun?

People I love to photograph are my own children, my friends, people I admire or honor, people that interest me or inspire me.  Places I photograph have often been nature oriented.

I am drawn to the adventure or challenge that is involved in order to get the shot.  Whether it is scrambling to get on a ski at a big wave spot, hiking along the Lost Coast, or swimming into the lineup, for me photographing my subject means I am involved or partaking in the experience as well.  Other times it is just really cool to be in the same frame of mind and connect myself to the person I am working with, and really be on their level, so in a way, I am working to capture a moment that truly represents them.

How did you get into shooting women's surfing?

As a female surfer, it was natural for me to gravitate to my own female kind as my photography subjects. To document grace and beauty and style in surfing is something I really appreciate and I am drawn to. And I also wanted to document the women's surf movement, and it has been such an amazing adventure and I have met so many talented surfers and friends in the process.  I really wanted to showcase females as athletes, maybe they look like they are dancing on a wave, maybe they are powerful, maybe they are just charging.  And there was and is so much fun in the process, the lifestyle, the laughs, the travels, the adventures.  Beauty is a part of it all.

Surfing was not only about the one shot of a girl's butt cheek, doing a bottom turn. There is such natural beauty in surfing, and I just wanted to document it in its true form. However, it is both female and male surfers that I enjoy photographing, riding crafts short and long, on waves big and small.

What is special about the women's surf community in Santa Cruz?

The women's surf community in Santa Cruz is diverse and rich, filled with living legends (Jane the Lane, Rosemary Rice, Kim Mayer), astounding big waves surfers  (Savannah Shaughnessy, JamStar, Sarah Gerhardt), craftswomen and stylish surfers such as Ashley Lloyd Thompson, strong community leaders (Zeuf Hesson), and up and coming groms.

The surfing community as a whole is full of many characters, both male and female, and all energies are vibrant in the water and create a family. The surfing community here is one whose respect should be earned, like all solid surf communities. Once earned, there is a strong bond and we are all connected, here in this northern nook of the Monterey Bay, and around the world.

It really is something, no matter where you are in the world, the ocean bonds us all together, and no one realizes this more than surfers.

Thank you Nikki for sharing your art and we are happy to be connected to you too through your creativity and our mutual love of the ocean!

Seeababe Surf Lessons: How to pack for your dream vacation

The road to surfer's paradise. Mele and Jenayl throw their extra clothes on top of their surfboards for carrying down to the beach in Mexico.

Taking a far-flung surf trip is the highlight of the year, and if you’re lucky like the Seeababes, you get to go on more than one. Our resident endless summer chasers with many stamps in their passports, Mele, Luki and Jenayl shared their advice and travel tips, just in time for winter getaways.

Here’s how and what they packed on their trip to Mexico to shoot the Seea Spring 2014 collection, coming out this month!

Getting all the boards ready for air transport.

Suitcase Strategy

Mele: “My packing list usually goes something like this: Money, ID, toiletries, first aid kit, travel journal, always double check for your wetsuit, bring stickers for quick ding repair. Never forget sunscreen and always bring adventurous travel companions.”

Adventurous travel companions? Check!

Luki: “Mexico is always pretty casual so I packed comfortable clothes, a lot of sun dresses, a pair of flip flops, nice flats, a pair of running shoes and of course I brought my favorite board to travel with: my Cheetah 9'4".”

Lounging at the beach rental in comfortable clothing.

Jenayl:“I packed a carry-on full of the essentials including the toiletries and tummy-ache helpers, and good sunscreen! For a trip to Mexico, you pack the sundresses, your flowey shirts for covering-up or walking around, high waisted shorts and that floppy hat we all love so much. After all the essentials are in there then as long as it fits in your bag, it’s allowed! Nothing too flashy but keep it light, comfy and cute!”

Bringing your Longboard

Mele: “Always get the bags with rollers at one end, so you can get around the airport easily. Bring board straps even if they’re the cheap ones from Home Depot. Always try to negotiate the board bag cost. Make friends with the baggage employees while you’re standing in line, it’ll make a huge difference when you go to weight your boards.”

A full roof and trunk on the way to the airport.
Mexico, here we come!
Bags and boards ready to go.

Once you're there, any empty spot on the porch will do to store those logs. Bonus, dry your soggy towels too.

Luki: “Traveling with longboards can be a drag! If its possible I always try to fit more than one log into a case. I've gotten away with fitting four boards in one bag for the price of one board. The board I usually travel with has a fin box rather than a glassed-in fin which makes things a lot easier. Other than that, drown it in bubble wrap!”

Luki scopes out the view in Mexico.

Souvenir Style

Luki: “I bought a bracelet and a large blanket that I use all the time. I love buying souvenirs from different countries, especially jewelry! The prices are usually very negotiable unlike anything in California, and everything you take home has a story and a memory behind it. I once bought a turquoise necklace for $10 in a jungle hut in Nicaragua and saw the exact same one in the airport at home for $60! It all depends on where you are!”

Did we mention to rent a car with roof racks?

The best souvenir of all—fun memories with friends old and new!

Vacation planning made easy: Central America Surf Camps!

Grab a friend and learn to surf. Photo courtesy of Bliss Surf Adventures in Costa Rica.

Planning a surf trip can be exciting with the possibilities, but also consume endless hours of travel research—and that’s before you add the swell report and best seasonal conditions to the equation. Vacation is about relaxing in a hammock and leaving the thinking to the experts. That’s why we love surf camps as a super easy packaged escape from reality that’s also the friendliest introduction for catching your first wave. Experienced surfers can gain professional coaching at a camp to add new tricks to your repertoire, not to mention the gorgeous views facing the shore.

No matter where your desired beach is around the globe, there is likely a surf camp closeby, and hopefully even a friend of Seea over there. In Mexico, our pal and longboarding queen Julie Cox coaches with Las Olas surf retreat in Mexico. In Southern California Amy Lowry teaches daily private lessons in Newport Beach.

For those with an eye on Central America, we talked to our friends (and Seea supporters in which we are forever grateful) at Surf With Amigas in Nicaragua and Bliss Surf Adventures in Costa Rica to get the scoop on the waves and extracurricular activities to help you plan your next winter holiday.

Split the peak in Nicaragua with Surf with Amigas. Photo courtesy of Amigas.

Surf with Amigas

Who: California-native, lifeguard, surf instructor and whitewater raft guide Jackie George was traveling in Central America and surprise! she wasn’t ready to leave beach life though her wallet said otherwise. She met up with pro surfer Holly Beck’s Surf with Amigas camp in Nicaragua and was able to extend her stay by teaching surf lessons. Its now been two years "Surfing with Amigas" and Jackie laughs, “I’m still not ready to go home and get a ‘real job!’”

Where: northern Nicaragua for beginners and all levels; El Salvador, The Philippines and Costa Rica for intermediate to advanced surfers.

When: 12 retreats per year

Accommodations: El Coco Loco, an ecolodge in Nicaragua and a short walking distance to fun, uncrowded waves.

Hanging out at the local bar between sessions. Photo courtesy of Amigas.

Your bunkmates are most likely: “We’ve had the full range of ages from 11-62, but our average age is mid-late 30s. Most of the Amigas are ladies who are adventurous but don’t have a big crew of girlfriends at home who are able to travel. Ninety percent come solo and leave the week with a new group of friends that they stay in touch with!”

Making your life easier: Amigas chooses each location based on the ideal seasonal weather, and each day is planned around the tide chart, with time still left to relax, do yoga or explore the area. “When you attend a surf camp, you have everything taken care of. We strive to make sure that our Amigas are worry-free from the second they arrive to the second they leave… We also provide high-level surf instruction that includes daily video coaching from Holly. That’s a big difference between our retreats and other surf camps out there.”

Beautiful views everywhere you look. Photo courtesy of Amigas.
Tonights entertainment: another breathtaking sunset. Photo courtesy of Amigas.

Travel tips: “I am a big proponent of sun protection. Wear a hat and sunglasses and good sunscreen that actually stays on in the water. I use Shiseido and love it. Make sure you have plenty of bikinis and an extra rashguard. Sarongs and water bottles always come in handy, and have a first aid kit. Keep an open mind to the possibilities each place has to offer and embrace every moment as an adventure and every night as a fiesta. Most importantly, respect the locals. They know what’s up. Traveling helps you learn about yourself and the way this magical world works, so get involved!”

Giving back to the community: In collaboration with “Waves of Hope” in Nicaragua, Surf with Amigas guests spend the windy onshore hours pitching in to build a high school in the area where previously there was no educational options offered past 6th grade. Surf With Amigas adopted the sea turtle conservation project that supports the acquisition and protection of sea turtle eggs and then releasing them after they hatch. Baby turtle season runs from October to December.

Bliss Surf Adventures

Who: Jessica Arnold got into surfing when she was attending Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego nearby Sunset Cliffs. She worked in public accounting for a hot second—enough to decide that a desk job wasn’t for her. After a short residency in Costa Rica, she knew the diverse waves and charming beach town of Nosara was the perfect place for a surf camp, thus Bliss was born. When Jessica is not in Costa Rica, watch her dance for a local ballet company in Orange County. “I really love the graceful and rhythmic movement of the ocean. Surfing and ballet appear to be really different activities but in reality the requirements to do both are similar: agility, timing, rhythm and physical fitness,” Jessica says.

Where: Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica

When: January through June

Accommodations: Swank house with a pool. “What I love most about our location is the break. There's something for everyone there from beginners to advanced surfers. I also love the rustic feel of the town and the laid back vibe.”

Your bunkmates are most likely: Women of all ages, shapes, backgrounds and experience levels, aged 18 to 60.

The Bliss house. Photo courtesy of Bliss.

The Real World minus the drama:“We all hangout at the Bliss surf house with each other and the group remains really tight knit throughout the week because we're not spread out amongst a hotel. Our staff members act as ‘one of the girls’ while hanging out. They don't clock in and out for surf lessons and then disappear… We all teach and share our experiences with each other and it really goes both ways. We (the staff) share what we love and know about Costa Rica, surfing, and our backgrounds but so many times we learn so much from our guests as well. We have amazing ladies attend our trips and we all learn from each other!”

Food: Typical Costa Rican cuisine of beans, rice and plantains are staples, plus fresh catch seafood pasta, barbecuing and takeout from a favorite local Italian restaurant.

Leisure time:  On the activities menu: take a dip in the pool, grab a hammock or a mat for yoga without leaving the house. Outside, there's zip lining through the jungle canopy, paddle boarding, riding quads, driving buggies, snorkeling, riding horses, sport fishing or spa treatments. “It's really the ultimate vacation with such a variety of things to do.”

Adventures in stoke: Jenayl Peters

With a wicked fade and cross step, the original version of this photo graces our first-ever print ad, as seen in Foam Symmetry. Photo: Nick LaVecchia

Not all Seeababes were born from surfing families straight into the waves. Daughter of a Los Angeles City Fireman, Jenayl Peters grew up close to the ocean, but it took lessons from a family friend to ignite the surf stoke. Once the flame was lit, Jenayl's passion for surf & sand took over, ditching water polo practice for trips to the beach, even when the waves were bad. “We made it fun regardless, every time.”

Jenayl’s home breaks are now in San Diego, where she studies Recreation and Surf Tourism at San Diego State University. The program is designed to understand the impact of tourism on the culture and environment of destination surf meccas, in hopes of mitigating irreparable damage to both.

With strong family ties and her head on straight, Jenayl can handle anything you throw at her, by land or sea!

What is your normal surf routine at home?

I feel like I am always on the go. When I wake up I check the waves to see where I want to surf after work or school. Usually my boards are in the car and suits are packed for the day. I keep an apple or a granola bar on hand for energy or a snack before. Afterwards I love a good smoothie for a refresher. To get pumped I have to admit, I love country music or oldies! They always put me in a good mood. If Mele and I are going out, we tend to get funky and the music gets real! I will try and find the best spot for tide and swell so that I can get in a good session in my day. If the swells up though - class gets postponed!

Jenayl's famous blue Bronco.

Your blue Bronco surf-mobile is legendary! What’s the story behind it?

That's the car I learned to drive with! My dad's rad light blue 1977 Ford Bronco. He threatens to sell it because something always seems to be breaking, but then he sees my brother take it out for a joy ride or me tie my boards to the top and cruise to the beach, and we know we won't let it sell. So much fun and so classic!

You also ride motorbikes. How did you get into that?

Motorbiking was a hobby my family and I did every fall to early spring since I was young. Besides camping at the beach this is what we did. I ventured off the sport since I started surfing because it seemed like the weekends that they would go to the desert the waves would be good. Since then though, I have remained around them and the feeling you get when you cruise around is a rush. I am saving for a motorcycle with a side rack for my board to cruise to the breaks or around town. It’s gonna be The SeeaCycle!!

Just having fun.
We love that Jenayl is always smiling.
Who did you grow up surfing with?

In high school I surfed with a mix. Mostly I'd go with whoever wanted to surf, it didn't matter! After graduation I ended up surfing alone a lot as I didn't have many friends at my new college. It was mostly guys in the line up, which I met and became friends with a lot of them. I enjoyed surfing with the guys as I learned heaps from them and was able to push myself. When I started meeting more girls who surfed around there too we became friends so fast and it was fun to meet up and surf together. Through contests, traveling, and Seea, I have been able to gain some great friendships with other girls and it is almost like a detox being able to have girl time and laugh together while out in the water!

Dyer Brand boards are sweet! So is Jenayl in this upcoming color of the Riviera One Piece, due out in March.

When you are not surfing, what are your other passions and activities you do for fun?

When the sea doesn't want to come out to play, I improvise! I love thrift store shopping. I love to find bargains and inspirations you can create from your fashion senses and creativity. I love hiking and baking as well. On a good day all three of those happen! Sailing is one of my passions. Though I don't frequent the boats as often as I'd like, it is my goal to acquire my sailing license and be able to be apart of that. Anything water, I'm good to go. Mermaid me please!

Sail away. Hats are important for sun protection!

Enjoying the view from the ocean.

What does surfing in Seea mean to you?

Seea to me represents the way every lady surfer should feel—in and out of the water. The suits are modest yet sexy, flirty, and functional. I like it because it is a lifestyle, an expression, an appreciation. It touches the culture of a vintage era when surfing was in its finest—when style, grace, and respect were vivid in the surfing culture. I love that when I surf, I can feel this way of a confident lady and respecting the true meaning of what surfing is.

A huge style of my surfing is inspired by the surfing and styles of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Seea touches those roots with such respect to these styles and wearing them is almost like an inspiration to me. When you can feel this way when you surf, it brings out the best for the session.

Jenayl hangs five with style.

What was it like being the only one in your family that surfs and what do they think of your surfing lifestyle?

In a way, it has shaped me. I got the opportunity to follow my own path and passion from a young age, reach out to others and encourage myself as well. When I started skipping water polo practice and swim team practice in high school because the waves were good, there was no stopping me. Mom and Dad didn't like it, but then saw it was my motivation, my passion, and they soon were the ones driving with me there. I chose the colleges I attended because of the waves. I met more friends and established more relationships through surfing than anything else. I'm very blessed to have the supportive parents that I do. When times get rough, they remind me to get a prayer or a surf in, and re-gather myself. It works every time.

The world is better with Jenayl in it, and we're happy to have her in our lives. Keep on the lookout for more of her captivating smile and easy, laid-back style as she shreds her way through the Point Loma swells this Winter.

Aloha Hawaii! Seea takes a trip to Oahu

The Kahala hotel and resort.

First stop was the beach! The lovely ladies from First Break Waikiki set us up with an umbrella & chairs for the day, and full access to their fleet of rental boards at the Royal Hawaiian. Built in 1927, this bright pink hotel is an unmistakeable Waikiki landmark, and an amazing place to spend the day.

The Royal Hawaiian circa 1930. The gentle break out front is called "Canoes". Now you know why!
This common area of the hotel pays homage to the early surf pioneers and the wooden "Alaia" boards, ridden by ancient Hawaiians centuries before them.

Amazing images like these were created by master photographer Anton Bruehl to entice travelers to visit the islands. This vintage Matson Line poster is on display at the Royal Hawaiian.
The courtyard at the Royal Hawaiian - nearly as beautiful as the beach!

Essential for rest and relaxation at the beach, a wide-brimmed hat and SunBum sunscreen kept our skin from burning under the noonday sun. We loved that the spray sunscreen and clear stick was easy to put on the skin and didn’t leave an oily residue. Don’t forget the SunBum “Cool Down” after-sun spray with aloe vera because in addition to smelling amazing, hydrating your skin and being a convenient spray, it leaves a nice glossy sheen on your legs and arms to look fresh when going out to dinner.

Our beach kit - perfect for a day at Waikiki

Even with a full stock of beach supplies, you can only take so much sun, so we spent the next few days exploring the shops and restaurants of Honolulu. Highlights include what could be the best breakfast buffet ever at the House Without a Key, and dinner at Morimoto, located on the second floor of our very own hotel, The Modern Honolulu.

Any excuse to shop is a good one, and a major part of the trip was to meet our retailers themselves, and put faces with names at places like GreenRoom Hawaii and Surf Garage. We also enjoyed a trip around Diamond Head to visit the Kahala Resort and Hotel, who'll be introducing Seea to resort guests there this Spring.

After a quick swim, we swung back through Waikiki for a stop at SpecialME, a cool little shop just off the beaten path on the north end of Kalakaua Ave. A big thanks to all the retailers who took time to meet and talk with us, and for their support in busy & beautiful Honolulu!

This store is full of unique art, soft print shirts, and brightly colored beach blankets. Thanks SpecialME!

Next stop - the North Shore! A must see for the surf faithful, winter trips here have been described as "a pilgrimage" for decades. With zero intentions of surfing life threatening waves, we were still curious and took the road up to Haleiwa to check it out for ourselves.

We have arrived to the North Shore.
Longboarders ruled on the famous reef break with no swell in sight.
Wouldn't you know it? Pipeline was flat! Guess we picked the wrong week for world class waves. The water was warm and inviting, so we did the next best thing and went swimming instead - a perfect way to end the day. Thanks to everyone who made our stay so enjoyable - we'll be back soon, promise!!

A huge mahalo to Tracey Kehler for his Aloha spirit & wonderful hospitality.

Get excited for more Seea neoprene and surfsuit newness this Summer! Seea previewed its limited edition Summer 2014 collection of never before seen suits at the Agenda trade show in Long Beach on January 7-8. The bi-annual gathering of active sports lifestyle industry buyers and press got an exclusive peek at the new Summer line, which consists of 24 styles, each limited to 100 units each!

The always smiling Amy Reda (previously Lowry, now freshly married) modeled the fit while Seeababes Jenayl Peters and Mele Saili were on hand to meet and greet friends like Shannon Menzel at Wetsand Surf Shop in Ventura, Alison and Diane from Diane's Beachwear, and Karen from Sun Diego Boardshop. We were extremely excited to meet with Need Supply from Richmond, Virginia and On The Beach from South Padre Island, Texas, as they will be the first accounts to carry Seea in their respective states! It was also great to meet the friendly new buyers from online retro icons Modcloth, and the original surf shop in Goleta, CA, Sundance Beach.

A fun Palomar crop top from the Summer collection shown with brand new high-waist bottoms with buttons. The hand-painted sign in the background is destined to grace the walls of Surfy Surfy, our favorite surf shop in Leucadia.

Special thanks to talented artist Colt Bowden who set up his easel on site and let us wonder at his steady brushstroke hand as he illustrated the lost of art of hand-painted signs. Guests got to request their favorite and obscure surf spots for Colt to paint onto a wood board and take the painting home as a keepsake.

Thanks to all the buyers, press, friends and Seea fans who came by to say hello!

Lucy's Healthy Superfoods Smoothie Recipe

Lucy slices open a coconut fresh from the tree.
Passionate foodie and chef, Lucy Mejia is an inspiration for living a simple life in a beautiful environment filled with healthy eating and joyful pursuits. Her morning starts in the oceanfront jungle palapa she calls home with her partner Jose, cracking open a coconut for refreshment and spending the daylight hours surfing, being active and making tasty food.

We met Lucy in her current home in Nayarit, Mexico while shooting the 2014 lookbook and were in awe of her love story. After getting married in Lucy’s native Australia, the couple came to Mexico to have a second wedding in Jose’s birth country. They traveled through Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador on the way and once they hit Mexico, needed a beach vacation before the second wedding ceremony.

“Before the wedding my mother arrived from Australia and I wanted to go somewhere on the beach near San Miguel de Allende. The only criteria were waves and proximity. So Sayulita was a place. I just saw it on the map!” she says.

They arrived at Playa Escondido, surfed themselves silly along the coast, then stumbled upon a space for rent in town they imagined was perfect for a café. It was serendipity. “Discovering this small surfing village, with an abundant local, organic farmers market and more than six surf breaks within a 20-minute drive, we were sold! Being from Byron Bay, Australia, one of the most beautiful places in the world to me, I never thought I would find another place to call home. I am so grateful,” she says. Just like that, Café Esperanza was born.

The local healthy food restaurant Café Esperanza shares Lucy’s alternative eating philosophy, based on her passion for nourishing foods. As an educated acupuncturist and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Lucy is our new go-to expert for wellness advice and easy and delicious recipes that are full of fresh ingredients.

Lucy shared with us an easy and healthy recipe using locally grown superfoods to give you long-lasting energy and hydration for however your day unfolds.

Every morning starts with fresh coconut water.

Why did you open Café Esperanza?

I love living whole delicious super foods that are prepared with love and intention. I care about how food makes me feel and I really care for the health and potential of our community. With pleasure we serve this food to our friends.

I believe that food is medicine. I take in my environment, the nature around me, the natural flora and fauna. What lives here? What thrives here? What’s local, seasonal and sustainable?

Our little café, La Esperanza is founded upon these questions. As a collective of dedicated, planet-loving, life-appreciating souls we ask you to join us in the celebration of eating consciously! The English translation of Esperanza is hope. Hope for the future generations and hope for humanity.

We believe that we are all born in perfect harmony and balance with nature. The choices we make throughout our lifetime affect this balance. Our vision, intentions and ultimately our food is developed with you in mind and is based on our desire to assist, inspire and nurture you into making the healthiest choices in life, enabling you to explore your full potential.

Welcome to Cafe Esperanza.

What are some of the superfoods that you regularly eat and why?

In Mexico we are blessed with an abundance of readily available superfoods. Superfoods by definition are calorie sparse and nutrient dense, meaning they pack a lot of punch for their weight as far as goodness goes. They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients.

Five of my favourite local superfoods are:

Coconut: High in electrolytes for hydration. Drinking the juice from a young coconut is like giving your body an instant blood transfusion.

Mesquite: Mesquite contains a high vitamin and mineral content, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. It is a fantastic sweetener alternative.

Chia: A wonderful source of protein to help build beautiful hair, skin, nails and vitally important muscles and red blood cells. Amino acids and fiber that help promote healthy heart and circulation.

Cocoa: One of the world's most concentrated sources of antioxidants found in any food.

Spirulina: This cultivated micro-algae has been consumed for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples in Mexico and Africa. It is one of the highest known protein sources on Earth and contains 70% complete protein.

The most readily available of these superfoods are coconuts. Coconuts are central to my life here in the jungle! My mornings ceremoniously include opening a fresh coconut with my machete as I check the swell. If I’m super keen to get in the water I’ll just drink the water and save the flesh for later. If feel that I’m needing more energy I’ll use the water and the flesh in a smoothie.
Smoothies packed with energy and flavor.
Lucy's Sayulita Superfood Smoothie

Flesh and water of one coconut
2 tablespoons of mesquite powder
2 tablespoons of maca
1 tablespoon chia seeds
½ teaspoon of vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Agave or raw honey to your desired sweetness
1 ripe bananna
1 cup of ice
1 cup of water

This is my favorite breakfast smoothie because it has all my essential nutritional needs to start the day and it’s all local, organic and sustainable. The recipe is flexible depending on what ingredients are available. For more nutritional potency I sometimes add kale, cocoa, blueberries, almonds, bee pollen and spirulina (vital mineral greens by Health Force Nutritionals is a reputable product). I may also add additional superfoods if available: 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds and 2 tablespoons of maca powder.

An easy way to impress your friends with breakfast after the surf is to take the left over smoothie and make a quinoa breakfast in a clear tall glass. Layer pre-cooked red and white quinoa with layers of smoothie and fresh fruit. My preference is bananna and mango and berries when they are available. You can also use apple and pear if this is local for you. Top it off with diced dates and figs, hemp seeds and bee pollen. Que rico! If you are trying to stay off dairy you wont even notice it missing in this creamy deliciousness. Enjoy!!
